Our Project

Lough Grainey Valley in east Co Clare, Ireland, is an area of immense beauty and ecological and cultural value. We are a community organisation dedicated to creating and maintaining a Nature Sanctuary in the Lough Grainey Valley.

In 2021,we were successful in purchasing and preserving the first 28 acres of land. In 2023, we were able to expand the Nature Sanctuary by a further 16 acres. Huge heartfelt thanks go to all of our donors, funders, and supporters, we couldn’t have done it without you!! Now, the wilderness and incredibly rich biodiversity of this land will be preserved in perpetuity.

It is envisioned that the Nature Sanctuary will continue to grow.

Our aim is to preserve as much land in this precious valley as possible for biodiversity, working together with the local community, and to allow it to thrive, and thus to ensure the increase in biodiversity, which, in turn, contributes to the health and well-being of the planet and all of us.

This land is unique and precious, it is rich in biodiversity including rare birds, plants and animals that are in decline, and some old oak trees, remnants of an ancient oak forest. Part of the land borders a river, forming a precious riparian woodland habitat. There is a variety of unique habitats here, with an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife.

At the present time of climate emergency and loss of biodiversity, we need to protect nature more than ever before.

“The creation of Lough Grainey Nature Sanctuary is an exceptional opportunity
to protect some of Ireland’s rarest species and habitats and I
sincerely hope that it becomes a reality.”

We envision Lough Grainey Nature Sanctuary to
become Ireland’s flagship project
in rewilding and protection of biodiversity.
